PHOTO: Topping the cows today was this Angus pen that Elders Kerr & Co sold for 330c/kg, with the no marker returning $2739 for Hemley Pastoral Stawell, the loin making $2449 for KG Calvert & Co and the 2 dot making $2567 for Elite Livestock Exports.
WVLX Mortlake agents yarded 1579 cattle this week being similar in numbers to the previous week’s yarding. The yarding was very mixed. Most bullocks displayed less weight with more manufacturing types on offer. The trade weight cattle lacked finish with the exception of the lead top end, with additional crossbreds lacking finish. The cow penning was mainly dairy types with few heavy weight beef types on offer. Not all processors were operating with one major processor absent. Feeder and restocker interest was evident across suitable lines. The offering consisted of 555 trade weights, 227 heavy weight along with 700 cows and 113 bulls.
With the drop in quality and one major processor absent the market lost 10 to 30c/kg over all categories and perhaps more in places. A small offering of vealers sold to 366c with trade weight steers and heifers selling from 300 and 395c/kg. Grown cattle topped at 390 with manufacturing steers making up to 348 with crossbred’s to 340c/kg. Heavy beef cows sold from 275 to 330c/kg with the medium weights between 225 and 268c/kg. The better covered dairy cows were generally selling from 225 to 310c/kg with grown beef bulls to 320c/kg.
