Agents offered 4,656 cattle at Mortlake’s fortnightly store sale. Quality was from average to good with the majority of the yarding Angus bred. There was an excellent offering of Western District weaner cattle lines combined with yearling steers and heifers. A much larger buying gallery attended as they made the journey from SA , NSW, Gippsland and also Western Victoria. Competition also came from processors and feeders were active for suitable lots. The mixed sex weaners and good quality yearlings sold to a lift in demand selling 20c to 40c dearer with the plainer yearlings in the sale easing from 10c to 30c/kg.
Angus steer weaners of medium to heavy weights made from 313c to 416c as they averaged 370c/kg. Light Angus steers made from 355c to 376c/kg. Hereford Angus cross steer weaners sold to the market top of 438c and a lighter sale made 420c/kg. European and British cross steers sold from 280c to 358c/kg. Angus weaner heifers of medium weight made from 220c to 338c averaging between 280c and 294c/kg. Light Angus heifer weaners sold from 262c to 356c/kg. European cross heifer weaners made 250c to 322c and the other British breeds were from 200c to 314c/kg.
Heavy steers made 315c to 335c selling cheaper 15c to 40c/kg. Yearling Angus steers 400kg plus sold from 316c to 372c and the lighter steers of all breeds ranged from 285c to 378c with a pen of Angus steers to 388c/kg. Angus yearling heifers made from 200c to 340c/kg.
