MARKET OPENS STRONG

The WVLX Mortlake fortnightly store sale yarded just on 3,000 cattle. The quality ranged from plain to very good, cattle with good finish and weight were in limited supply. A large portion of the yarding were lightweight crossbred and plainer types. The yarding consisted of grown steers and heifers, weaner cattle, cows and calves and PTIC heifers and cows. Most of the usual buyers were present from South Australia, Gippsland and locally. The market opened strong on the better quality heavy grown steers and heifers and well bred weaner steers, selling firm to slightly easier. The lightweights and plainer Crossbred types sold from 10c to 20c/kg softer and more in places. On the comparison market to a month ago the Angus/Friesian and crossbred Cattle sold 10c to 30c/kg stronger.

Weaner Angus steers selling from 350c to 480c, Black Baldy’s made from 278c to 380c/kg. Angus x Friesian steers sold from 260c to 370c and the Friesian steers made from 120c to 125c/kg. Grown Angus steers sold from 376c to 450c, Black Baldy’s and Herefords made from 314c to 422c and Euro cross steers sold from 288c to 388c/kg. Angus x Friesian steers sold from 242c to 384c, Friesian x steers made from 120c to 364c and Friesian steers made from 138c to 250c/kg.

Weaner Angus heifers sold from 264c to 368c, Black Baldys and Herefords sold from 220c to 238c/kg with limited numbers penned. Euro cross heifers made from 248c to 356c/kg. The Angus x Friesian heifers sold from 196c to 250c/kg. Grown and yearling Angus heifers made from 280c to 360c. Black Baldys, Herefords and Euro breeds sold from 248c to 366c/kg. Angus x Friesian heifers sold from 200c to 320c/kg.

PTIC Heifers and Cows made from $1,400 to $1,860 for the better quality and crossbreds and plainer types made from $340 to 700/head with limited numbers offered. Cow and calf units made from $850 to $1,800/head, with 1 pen of Black Baldy cow and calf units selling to $2,260 and a pen of Red Angus sold to $2,225/head.
