BETTER QUALITY GROWN STEERS 40-80C/KG BETTER

PHOTO: Craig Dettling of Rigi Trust, Macarthur sold this pen of 40 Angus grown steers (487kg) through Southern Grampians Livestock for 392c/kg, averaging $1909ph at today’s WVLX store sale.

Mortlake fortnightly store sale yarded 5,410 cattle mostly consisting of Angus bred, with a smaller offering of Hereford, Black Baldys and Euro X cattle. The quality improved across all categories. Heavy steers presented in very good condition for this time of the year, while a large portion of the yarding were well bred cattle in light winter condition. All the usual buyers and extras from Gippsland, South Australia and New South Wales were on the rail in a very strong market, having great results across the yarding. Light weight weaner steers in places selling from 75c to 150c/kg stronger and the yearling light weight steers sold to 100c/kg dearer. The better quality grown steers were to 40c/kg better. Most heifers sold from 30c to 80c/kg stronger. On the comparison market to a month ago steers sold from 40c to 80c dearer, and the heifers sold from 25c to 80c/kg stronger, however there were sales of well over 100c/kg dearer for the light weights and plainer types.

Weaner Angus steers selling from 396c to 482c for the heavier weights and the light weights sold from 400c to 480c/kg. Black Baldys made from 384c to 460c/kg. Angus grown steers made from 355c to 434c/kg and the yearlings sold from 370c to 448c/kg. Black Baldys made from 365c to 428c, and Herefords made from 340c to 390c/kg.  Weaner Angus heifers sold from 302c to 388c, Black Baldys made from 312c to 366c/kg. Grown and yearling Angus heifers made from 270c to 388c/kg. Black Baldys made from 288c to 382c/kg. Herefords and Euro breeds sold from 268c to 382c/kg.
