BUYER URGENCY DRIVES UP PRICES

PHOTO: Topping the WVLX market today were these Angus grown steers that reached 388c/kg under the Southern Grampians Livestock hammer, averaging $2557ph for Banquet Pastoral.

Numbers at WVLX Mortlake reduced this week to 1880 head some 358 less than last week. The quality was similar to the previous market. Trade and manufacturing cattle showed some improvement in quality. All the regular buyers were present but not all were active which had little bearing as the market improved over most categories by up to 30c/kg in places with strong feeder and restocker interest. There was more urgency in the market where grown cattle gained 15 to 20c/kg and trade weights improved 20 to 30c/kg. Manufacturing cattle also improved 30c/kg and most of the cows were up 35 to 40c/kg. Bulls also stronger by up to 30c/kg.

Trade weight steers and heifers sold between 310 and 375c/kg and grown cattle topped at 388c/kg. Manufacturing steers sold to 290c/kg. Heavy beef cows sold from 260 to 318c/kg with the medium weights between 230 and 270c/kg. Dairy cows with cover were generally between 210 and 276c/kg with grown beef bulls selling to 292c/kg.
