HEIFERS TOP TODAY’S MARKET

PHOTO: Topping the Mortlake market today was this pen of Angus heifers weighing 420kg that Southern Grampians Livestock sold for 518c/kg, averaging $2176ph for JC, HM & PJ Dumesny.

Agents yarded 187 at Mortlake comprising 145 export 36 trade as well as 6 grown bulls. Not all the regular buyers were present, however, feeder competition was active. The quality on offer over all was good this week with more cattle on offer well covered in most categories.

The sale was generally firm for most categories with the exception of heavy beef cows which improved up to 30c/kg in places and dairy cows being stronger by 10c to 15c/kg. Quality played into much of these improved prices. 

Yearling Steers and Heifers to the trade made between 428kc/kg and 518c/kg with feeders paying to 512c/kg. Grown Steers and heifers were making between 380c and 496c/kg. Manufacturing steers sold to 412c/kg. 

Best Beef cows sold to 412c/kg with the general run making between 330c and 402c/kg. Dairy Cows sold from 270c to 340c/kg with the very light dairy cows making between 210c to 242c/kg. Grown beef bred bulls to 330c/kg.
