MARKET FIRM ON BETTER QUALITY HEAVY CATTLE

PHOTO: Hugh Rahles-Rahbula of Yera Estate (Leslie Manor) sold 266 mixed sex cattle at today’s WVLX Store Sale through Charles Stewart Nash McVilly, including 75 weaner steers (315kg) for 432c/kg, $1361ph and 32 weaner heifers (248kg) for 308c/kg, $763ph.

WVLX Mortlake fortnightly store sale yarded 5,500 cattle. The yarding consisted of Angus bred steers and heifers, with a small offering of Black Baldys, Herefords and Euro Cross cattle. The quality was plain to very good, a large portion of the yarding were well bred cattle in lighter condition and young just weaned steers and heifers as the dry winter conditions continue throughout the region. Buyers from South Australia, Northern Victoria, Gippsland and locally were on the rail with a large gallery of onlookers. The market opened reasonably firm on the better quality heavier steers and well-bred weaner steers to sell firm to 10c cheaper, while the lighter weight steers sold 20c to 40c softer and more in places. Heifers sold mostly firm for the heavier weights and again the lighter weights slipped 20c to 30c\kg.

Weaner Angus steers selling from 390c to 476c for the heavier weights and better quality, while the light weights and plainer types sold from 252c to 378c/kg. Black Baldys made from 342c to 444c, Herefords made from 310c to 340c and Euro cross steers sold from 302c to 352/kg.  Grown Angus steers sold from 370c to 450c, Black Baldys made from 355c to 416c, Herefords made from 312c to 384c/kg. Euro cross steers sold from 320c to 388c/kg.

Weaner Angus heifers sold from 230c to 370c, Black Baldys made from 228c to 340c, Herefords sold from 206c to 302c/kg with limited numbers penned. Euro cross heifers made from 244c to 288c/kg. Yearling Angus heifers made from 280c to 366c. Black Baldys, Herefords and Euro breeds sold from 270c to 360c/kg.
