PHOTO: David, Kaye and Michael Blackburn of ‘Eilyer’, just south of Lake Bolac, sold 22 cattle for the first time at WVLX today at the prime market and were very impressed with the facility. Among their lot were 2 Angus X Steers that sold for 290c/kg (ave. weight 485kg) and 1 Angus X Angus Heifer @ 268c/kg (weight 464kg).

Total Yarding: 397

An increased sized yarding of 397 cattle at Mortlake, which was up by 91 head, sold to a larger number of buyers present. Competition did lift for the mixed quality offering of all categories. There was some well-presented beef bred cow and heifers in places and there was an improvement in the quality of the grown steers as they averaged 10c to 20c/kg dearer with some sales higher as they reached the market top of 311c/kg. The heavier cows with good cover 3 and 4 scores sold 3c to 7c/kg dearer and the lighter cows lifted an estimated 15c/kg. The grown heifers and bulls sold to firm levels and the young cattle averaged unchanged with some of the better quality dearer in places up to 10c/kg during the market.

The few pens of vealers sold from 265c to 290c/kg, with the C2 and C3 yearling steers making 240c to 296c/kg, yearling heifers C2 and C3 made 261c to 270c/kg as restockers and feeders were active paying from mostly 236c to 290c/kg.

The C2 and C3 grown steers sold from 266c to 311c/kg, the best of the D and C muscle grown heifers were from 223c to 257c/kg and a pen of D2 dairy bred heifers sold for 230c/kg. E1 cows made 160c to 192c/kg, D1 and D2 dairy cows made between 193c to 220c/kg as a restocker purchased cows for 160c and 181c/kg. The D2 and D3 beef cows made 225c to 253c/kg and the C muscled cows continued to sell to more demand from 237c to 264c/kg and the heavy beef bulls made 235c to 256c/kg.
