It was a very mixed, increased offering of cattle at today’s prime market in Mortlake that attracted a couple of extra buyers. Price trends varied as vealers sold on average 10c higher, while yearlings were from unchanged to 15c/kg dearer. The plainer grown steers were from equal to 10c cheaper, but the better quality made up to 5c to 10c/kg more. Poor quality cows also lifted 5c to 10c/kg, while the better cows sold mainly unchanged, as were the grown heifers. Heavy weight bulls eased 2c to 4c/kg.

Restockers and processors paid from 220c to 290c for average to good quality vealers and from 235c to 280c/kg for the yearlings. The D2 yearlings varied widely in quality, making from 162c to 240c, as the D1s sold from 120c to 185c/kg.

The C3 and C4 grown steers made from 248c to 300c, as the D2 grade sold from 180c to 196c, with one sale at 210c/kg. Many of the D1s sold from 150c to 177c/kg. Most C3 and C4 grown heifers made from 240c to 258c, with a restocker purchasing D2s from 235c to 240c/kg. Only average quality C3 and C4 cows mainly came forward this week and they sold from 201c to 215c/kg. The cheaper D2 cows were from 155c to 186c, with D1 cows making from 158c to 176c/kg. The few dearer E1 grades sold from 120c to 155c/kg. Heavy weight B2 bulls made from 207c to 220c, as C2 bulls sold from 180c to 214c/kg.
