SMALLER AND SOFTER MARKET THIS WEEK

PHOTO: This pen of Angus cows was one of a few pens that fetched the top of 265c/kg today at WVLX Mortlake. J&J Kelly sold the pen weighing 800kg, which returned $2120ph for GA & ML Gapes.

Total Yarding: 655

Numbers declined dramatically at WVLX Mortlake this week where agents penned 655 cattle, a decrease of some 600 head on the previous week’s market. The quality was plain and very mixed. Not all buyers operated and restocker interest was restricted. The majority of the steers and trade cattle were purchased by feeder operators and the market overall was very soft.

Grown cattle were back 10 to 15c/kg with the trade cattle easing by 20c/kg. Cows were softer by up to 25c/kg. The sale comprised of 120 grown cattle, 255 trade, 260 cows and 26 bulls. A handful of vealers on offer made to 372c/kg. Trade steers and heifers sold from 335c and 400c/kg. Grown cattle topped at 375c/kg.

Good heavy beef cows realized between 210c and 265c/kg. Grown beef bulls topped at 225c/kg with cubs to 266c/kg.
