MARKET REPORT – WEANER SALE – 4 JANUARY, 2019

PHOTO: Congratulations to Henry Cameron, wife Karen and son Damian who had the best presented pen of Steers at today’s Weaner Sale. They sold 213 cattle all up, including this pen of 104 Angus steers that were sold by Elders Kerr & Co for 326c/kg (96 ave weight 337.1kg, 8 ave weight 390kg).

Total Yarding: 2,723

The inaugural Weaner Sale at WVLX saw a great line up of well-bred, local Western District weaner cattle which were presented in excellent condition by the vendors.

There was a good spread of buyers that were happy to purchase in large numbers, with the market topping at 326c/kg for a pen of 104 steers – which also won the best presented pen of the day!

Steer prices ranged from 285 to 326c/kg across all breeds of cattle. Vealers topped at $1350p/h with only very few pens of open auction calves due to our weaners weighing out very well.

Weaner Heifers sold to a top of 282c/kg and $1071p/h, and consistently sold through from 240 to 280c/kg, There very few pens of open auction heifers on offer, with the top price reaching $830p/h down to $580p/h.

The market overall was 10c dearer than we expected. The weights in the calves this year were heavier than we were anticipating due to the late seasonal rains.

There was a very good turn up of buyers as well as a very large crowd despite the heat. We are lucky to have a facility with a sprinkler system in place to cool the cattle and under-cover facility down, given that it was 38 degrees just prior to the sale.

Finally, congratulations to Margaret Hallyburton who donated 2 weaner steers for auction today in order to raise money for ‘Dolly’s Dream’ – the foundation that aims to reduce bullying and its effects. Well done Margaret!
